Union Bank Bathurst Branch £1 Specimen
Australia Union Bank Bathurst Branch £1 ND (1854-60) Pick UNL MVR2asp Specimen Proof
Unlisted in the Krause catalog, this London-based bank finally bowed out of the Australian banking scene in 1951. A pencilled date of May 26, 1854 appears at lower left. Some minor toning is evident, along with some ink bleedthrough from another note which was resting on this note’s face. PMG About Uncirculated 53.
Estimate: $6,000 – $9,000.
Scarce 1909 Bank of Hamilton $100
Hamilton, ON- Bank of Hamilton $100 June 1, 1909 Ch. # 345-20-26
An elusive denomination which features a seated Britannia with allegorical vignettes of Agriculture and Commerce in the background. According to the Charlton guide, this example may well be one of only two survivors listed for the issue. It has an E overprinted twice. At first glance, the note certainly has the appearance of a VF, as it faces up quite nicely. As with any Canadian rarity, any estimate here is but a guess, but we are inclined to believe this PMG Choice Fine 15 piece will end in the area of…
Estimate: $25,000 – $35,000.
Exceedingly Rare 100 Somali Specimen
Italian Somaliland Cassa per la Circolazione Monetaria Della Somalia 100 Somali 1950 Pick 15s Specimen
The first time for an example of this Specimen to go under the hammer at our auctions. Both issued and Specimen examples are scarce, the latter being far more so. In high grade, notes from this issue are highly coveted, as seen by the regular issue PCGS 66 PPQ that realized more than $22,000 in one of our auctions last year. This is a high-grade beautiful example with “Annullato” roulette cancelled at center. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ.
Estimate: $20,000 – $25,000.
Incredibly Rare Panamanian 1941 10 Balboa
Panama Banco Central de Emission 10 Balboas 1941 Pick 24a
Notes from this issue are highly sought. The Conquistador on the 1 Balboa note is an iconic Central American design that top collector’s want lists. The 10 Balboa note is far rarer, with auction appearances a few years apart on average. We are surprised another example appeared at auction so soon after the one in mid-2014 popped up. We may be in store for another drought. That example, a PMG VF 35, brought more than $15,000 at auction. This piece is a solid PMG Very Fine 25, with solid colors and problem-free paper. A lovely and scarce note that should command…
Estimate: $9,000 – $12,000.
Extraordinarily Rare 500 Pesetas
Spain Banco de Espana 500 Pesetas 1.4.1880 Pick 22
It was unusual for monetary authorities to forego royalty and politicians for portraits on the paper money of yesteryear. At left on this 500 Peseta note is the portrait of Claudio Coello. The entire issue featured oversized portraits and was a short-lived and now highly prize issue. Fibers are inlaid along the right third of the note, over a denomination watermark. With few examples available to collectors outside of institutions, we expect this eye-appealing PCGS Apparent Very Fine 30 to be one of the standouts in this auction.
Estimate: $25,000 – $35,000.
