1894-O Barber Dime

Lot 2065 in Rarities Night of our Official Auction of the 2017 ANA World’s Fair of Money features an incredible 1894-O Barber dime from the Fossil Creek Collection, certified MS-66 by PCGS and approved by CAC. The surfaces of this deeply original Gem display iridescent turquoise and honey gold encircling a mostly brilliant center. The coin is richly frosted and satiny throughout, and features bold definition and exceptional preservation.

Astounding eye appeal and superlative technical merit combine to make this an extremely appealing Barber dime.

The 1894-O is one of the most significant key dates in the Barber dime series. With only 720,000 produced, it ranks second in rarity behind only the 1895-O in Mint State. The small mintage figure ensured that most of the issue would see heavy circulation; as a result, the majority of survivors are in Extremely Fine and lesser levels of preservation. Premium Gems like the present example are extremely scarce, and this piece ranks in the condition census for the issue. It is among the finest few certified by PCGS, tied at the current grade with just six other coins including the Eliasberg-Simpson specimen, and three certified finer through MS-67.

For Registry Set participants and collectors of high-grade 19th-century U.S. types, lot 2065 represents a significant opportunity.

This piece will be featured in the Rarities Night session of our August 2017 ANA auction, accompanying such rarities as the Lord St. Oswald-Norweb 1794 Flowing Hair dollar and the 1853-O No Arrows Liberty Seated half dollar from the Garrett Collection.
