Last of the Missouri Cabinet Coins Leads the Way…

By CoinWeek News Staff

With the Long Beach Coin, Currency, Stamp & Sports Collectible Show set to kick off on Saturday, January 29, the Los Angeles-based dealers Ira and Larry Goldberg are in the midst of conducting a seven-session auction that covers a broad range of numismatics–from Colonial and Classic U.S. coins to World Coins and Ancients.

Session One was held Sunday, January 25, and saw strong prices for a number of early American coppers, including a 1793 half cent (Cohen-2, Rarity 3, PCGS MS63BN), the last of the Missouri Cabinet, which brought a respectable price of $112,125. Goldberg’s sold a MS62BN example of this rarity at last year’s Missouri Cabinet auction, held in January. This year’s specimen was misplaced at the time and was therefore not included.

Goldberg’s has prepared a special insert concerning this lot for collectors of the 2014 catalog. For details on how to order a copy, please email the firm at [email protected] or call at 1-800-978-2646.

An exceptionally-rare English-struck Washington “Roman Head” cent (Breen 1249, Baker-19, W-10840. Rarity-6, PCGS PR64BN)–so-called but in fact a satire on America’s First President, depicting him in an Imperial manner–brought a healthy $80,500, well exceeding the presale estimate of $65,000 but falling short of the $88,125 the same piece brought at the Stack’s January 2013 New York Americana Sale.

The plate coin at PCGS Coinfacts, the 1831 Classic Head half cent (Breen 1-A, R7, PCGS PR62RB; Pop 1 at PCGS, 1 Finer) offered at the Goldberg sale beat its presale estimate of $50,000 by bringing $63,000 (with buyer’s fee). The coin is one of less than a dozen original proof strikes known and was last offered in 2012 at the McCawley Grellman Pre-Long Beach Sale.

The Cohen-2 Variety of the 1796 Liberty Cap half cent is spectacularly rare and practically unheard of in Mint State. An NGC-graded MS61 example belonging to Eugene Gardner sold in October 2014 for $129,250. The example offered on Sunday traces its pedigree back to an Edward Cogan sale in 1874 and once belonged in the collections of notable collectors Parmelee, Proskey, and Pittman. The Almost Uncirculated coin was given a details grade by PCGS due to a scratch.

That fact didn’t dissuade bidders, as the coin sold for $49,450.

Wrapping up the top five was a beautiful Massachusetts Pine Tree shilling (Noe-2, Jumbo Planchet, Ex: Richard Picker, Ex: Hain Family, PCGS MS61), which brought $27,600.

CoinWeek will report the results of these sales tomorrow.
