STACK’S BOWERS GALLERIES SELLS MORE THAN $10.1 MILLION IN BALTIMORE

Over 4,800 U.S. Coin, Currency and Exonumia Lots Realize Over $8.1 Million

IRVINE, Calif. – Stack’s Bowers Galleries conducted its official Baltimore auction from March 29-April 2, an impressive sale that yielded a strong $10,186,912. The sale contained important pieces from notable collections like the J. David Bonn, Sr., Family Trust Collection, the Reference Collection of Q. David Bowers, the Jarapendo Collection, the Rajj Collection, and many other important properties. As the only official auctioneer of the Whitman Coin and Collectibles Baltimore Expo, the sale witnessed heavy participation on all fronts.

The Jarapendo Collection, a collection that has been off the market for decades, was built around a core of rare and beautifully toned pattern coins. The coins performed extraordinarily well as the bidding was spirited and competitive; lot 9036, the ex-Farouk, and possibly unique, 1869 pattern eagle in nickel opened at $16,500 and climbed to $48,875 before it closed. Similarly, the exceedingly rare and vividly toned 1871 Judd-1151 pattern dollar in copper offered as lot 9065 opened at $25,000 and was bid up to an astounding $115,000, eliciting an outburst of applause in the auction room.

“I am delighted with the results of our June sale,” commented Chris Napolitano, President of Stack’s Bowers Galleries. “The combination of the dynamic Whitman Coin and Collectibles Expo, the depth and breadth of the coins and paper money in our sale, and the strength of the market all came together to produce results that exceeded our expectations. It is an Internet world today, and in addition to bidders at the Expo itself, collectors, dealers and investors worldwide turned out in force to create a win-win situation for all involved.”

Director of Currency Matt Quinn noted, “The June sale was well received by the paper money industry as we had a 95 percent sell through for banknotes. A few key lots enjoyed spirited bidding with the most notable being Lot 3091, an uncut sheet of Continental Currency. The sheet hammered for $22,500 against an estimate of $12,000 to $16,000.”
