Promising First Day Sales for 2017 Gold, Silver U.S. Bullion Coins

By Hubert Walker for CoinWeek ….
Monday, January 9 saw the release of the United States Mint’s 2017 line of gold and silver bullion coins – namely the American Silver Eagle, the American Gold Eagle and the American Gold Buffalo. And, according to numbers provided by Michael White of the Mint’s Office of Corporate Communications, first day sales were especially strong for the American Eagles.

A total of 68,000 ounces across the entire American Gold Eagle bullion coin product line were sold to authorized distributors on January 9, an increase of 8,000 ounces (+13.33%) over last year’s first day sales. The following table presents a breakdown of first day sales for the individual Gold Eagle products:

This year’s American Silver Eagle 1 oz bullion coin sold 3,747,500 units on the first day, an increase of 991,000 (+35.95%) over 2016’s figure.

American Gold Buffalo first day sales were slightly weaker than in 2016, but only by 500 units (-2.38%). 20,500 units of the 1 oz 2017 Gold Buffalo bullion coin were sold Monday, while 21,000 were sold on January 11, 2016 when U.S. Mint bullion products went on sale last year.

None of the 2017 coins were sold directly to customers. In order to help regulate the market its precious metal bullion coins, the United States Mint fulfills orders from its specially approved Authorized Purchasers. These purchasers include a variety of retail and wholesale coin dealers, precious metals companies and financial institutions. In recent years, sales of certain U.S. Mint bullion products–most notably the American Silver Eagle–were parceled out in monthly allocations. Currently, no such allocations are in effect for 2017.

American Platinum Eagle bullion coins will be available to purchasers later in the month.

As for bullion products issued in 2016, the Mint announced on December 6 that it had sold out of all American Gold Eagle 1 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz bullion coins, as well as the 5 oz Theodore Roosevelt National Park silver bullion coin. 2016 American Gold Buffalos and half-ounce Gold Eagles will remain on sale until all available stock is depleted, after which time no more will be made. The same applies to the 2016 Harpers Ferry and Fort Moultrie America the Beautiful 5 oz silver coins.

In other Mint sales news, a total of 35,612 America the Beautiful Quarters 2017 Proof Sets had been sold as of January 8 when the Mint last updated their numismatic sales figures. The 2017 ATB Proof Set debuted on January 5.
