Red Kettle Report: December 6 – 13, 2015

By Hubert Walker for CoinWeek ….
Salvation Army bell ringers continued to spread holiday cheer as they collected donations last week in many communities around the country.

And generous, perhaps numismatically-minded donors continued to drop gold coins in the Salvation Army’s famous red kettles.

If you’re like us, you’re probably curious about what happens to these gold coins once they’re donated. According to the Salvation Army, gold coins and other valuables are professionally appraised. The coins are then auctioned off to collectors. The proceeds from these sales go to support the mission of the Salvation Army, which, during the holiday season, primarily focuses on feeding those currently in need.

This week’s Red Kettle Report covers gold coins donated between December 6 and December 13.

  1. What about the number of silver bullion coins dropped in the kettles? There seems to be a fixation on gold coins but no one ever speaks about the number of silver eagles, art bars, etc. which find their way into the kettles each year.

    • Jim,

You’re right that a lot of valuable silver coins get dropped in Salvation Army kettles every holiday season – but then again, a lot of VALUABLES in general get dropped into the kettles. Silver and gold coins, rounds, bars, ingots, jewelry, high-denomination bills, etc., etc. All of it greatly appreciated by the Salvation Army.

Nonetheless, the gold items – specifically coins – are more valuable than the silver ones, which means fewer gold coins are dropped into kettles on average. This tends to make them more newsworthy, especially during Christmastime when news outlets are looking for stories that demonstrate our better, more giving, more compassionate natures.

Also, a report that included or focused on silver coins would be almost unwieldy in size to both read and write.

      Best,

      Hubert Walker
