Patrick Heller Named 2012 Harry J. Forman Dealer of the Year

Patrick Heller is the 2012 recipient of the American Numismatic Association Harry J. Forman Dealer of the Year Award, which was presented Aug. 7 at the World’s Fair of Money Kick-Off event at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

The award is presented annually to an ANA-member dealer who shows uncommon dedication to strengthening the hobby and the Association. The award is named in honor of the late Harry J. Forman, a Philadelphia coin dealer, author and ANA life member.

As a businessman, Heller has grown Liberty Coin Service, in Lansing, Mich., from a three-person staff in 1982 to a 22-person staff today. The company’s 2011 sales volume was 50 times greater than in 1982. He also helped to secure sales and use tax exemptions for rare coins and precious metals in Michigan, and has assisted the Michigan Attorney General’s office on investigations of consumer fraud involving numismatics.

Heller has led the ANA’s Finance, Budget and Audit committee since 2007. An ANA life member, Heller serves as Treasurer of the Industry Council for Tangible Assets, and belongs to 13 numismatic associations.

A prolific author, Heller writes about the coin market for multiple publications, including Numismatic News, Numismaster and CoinWeek.com – in addition to hosting his own radio show.

The World’s Fair of Money is the nation’s premier money show. The event features more than 1,000 numismatic dealers with the best inventory anywhere; the ANA Museum Showcase exhibiting some of the world’s most valuable and beautiful coins and paper money; a Mint Promenade with mints from around the world; the Collector Exhibits area; a world-class auction by Stack’s Bowers Galleries; educational presentations and seminars; and special events including the ANA’s annual awards banquet.

The American Numismatic Association is a congressionally chartered nonprofit educational organization dedicated to encouraging people to study and collect money and related items. The ANA helps its 28,000 members and the public discover and explore the world of money through its vast array of education and outreach programs, as well as its museum, library, publications, conventions and seminars. 1. Many congratulatoins, Patrick! While I might and do disagree with almost all of your economic theories/argumments, nothing in that changes the fact that this is a well and truly earned honor. Your dealings as a coin dealer are top notch, your dealer ethics (as opposed to my views on the ethics of your more ‘out there’ writings, which remain unchanged) are among the best there are, and all you do to promote numismatics is amazing. Well done, sir. Now if I could just coax you off that Austrian Fool economics paradigm….

    • Thanks Kurt. I’m sure we’ll continue to disagree about economics but most everyone can enjoy numismatics and share a lot of positive things. I appreciated your article in Numismatic News offering tips on enjoying Philadelphia while there for the convention.

      • Yes, it’s amazing, isn’t it? One can be a numismatist even though one DOESN’T believe we’re on the eve of economic Armageddon. I have preferred to concentrate on the great diversity and variety of numismatic material(s) that our last 6 or so decades of inflationary economics has created. It’s not all bad unless your view is strictly on the “big 2” metals.

As Yogi Berra once said, “I’d like to thank all of those who made this occasion necessary.”
