Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio to Offer Over 2,000 Lots as Official ANA Auctioneer

IRVINE, Calif. – Join Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio as they conduct the Official Auction of the August 2012 World’s Fair of Money! The world and ancients division of Stack’s Bowers Galleries will present over 1,300 lots of ancient and world coins and paper money on Wednesday, August 8 and Friday, August 10. Please note that we will also be offering an Internet-only session containing over 700 lots of ancient and world coins and paper money that will close on Tuesday, August 14. The sale will feature coins from the Demarete Collection, the Madeleine Collection, and much more.

Session A will take place on Wednesday, August 8, beginning at 10:00 a.m. and is comprised of world paper money and ancient coins. A nice run of Australian notes is highlighted by an incredible 1918 Commonwealth of Australia 10 Shillings note graded Very Fine 30 EPQ by PMG. Canadian notes feature a beautiful 1935 Bank of Canada $25 note graded PCGS Choice About New 58 as lot 20081, and the section of Danish West Indies notes showcases a 1905 Danish West Indies National Bank 10 Francs graded Very Fine 30 EPQ by PMG.

The section of ancient coins is punctuated by several important rarities, like the beautiful Extremely Fine gold Distater of Alexander the Great, the largest gold issue of that ruler. Sassanian gold offers a nice group of Dinars, including an extremely rare example of Ardashir I that is boldly detailed in Very Fine condition, and ancient Egyptian coinage boasts a lovely Ptolemy IV gold Octodrachm in Extremely Fine. Among Roman Imperial coinage, highlights include a lustrous and very choice Septimus Severus gold Aureus in Nearly Mint State and a very rare gold Quinarius of Probus graded Good Very Fine.

Session B will take place on Friday, August 10 beginning at 10:00 AM and will cover world gold coins, crowns, and minors. Gold issues feature a lovely example of the very rare Australian 1852 Adelaide Pound. Historically significant as the first Australian coin produced in Australia from Australian ore, this important coin is graded MS-63+ by PCGS. A large selection of British rarities showcases a high grade Oxford mint Triple Unite, a well struck coin with attractive and original surfaces in PCGS AU-58. Russian coins feature a number of very rare pieces in both gold and platinum, like the low mintage 1755 gold 5 Ruble in NGC AU-55, the very rare platinum 12 Ruble of 1831 in the same grade, and the Mint State 1830 platinum 6 Ruble that is tied for the second finest certified in the grade of NGC MS-64.

The section of world crowns and minors provides a pleasing selection of coins that offers something for every collector. Brazilian coins feature a nice run of countermarked cobs, Minas Gerais countermarks, and pattern issues, and French coinage showcases an excellent selection of high grade 5 Franc pieces, many from the Madeleine Collection. British rarities are once again at the fore, with an extremely rare 1644 Oxford mint Pound offered as lot 40575. A well struck example of the issue, this coin is graded EF-45 by NGC and presents a great opportunity to own a distinctly rare coin from a tumultuous period in Britain’s history.

Eastern European rarities are highlighted by an incredible early 18th century Polish silver tankard that is inlaid with 17 Talers and Klippes struck at Elbing before or during the reign of John Casimir (1649-1668). The coins are Polish Talers, save for three Talers of the Swedish possessions in the region, and all are very rare issues. Other Polish rarities include lot 40727, a choice 1586 Lithuania Taler of Stephen Bathory graded MS-64 by NGC. Russian coins feature an NGC Unc Details example of the low-mintage 1836 “Family Ruble” from the Demarete Collection, as well as an 1841 Marriage Ruble housed in a PCGS AU-58 holder.
