Canada 2015 Lake Huron $20 Silver Coin

Description:

In 2014, the Royal Canadian Mint launched a five coin subscription program celebrating North America’s five Great Lakes. This limited edition program features five colorized and enamel-coated one ounce silver coins depicting each of the Great Lakes from a top-down topographic perspective. The visual representation is stunning and utilizes the coin’s relief and modern minting technology to its fullest potential. Each coin in this series has a limited mintage of 10,000 pieces. The Lake Huron $20 Silver Coin is the fourth coin released in this series.

From the Royal Canadian Mint:

Lake Huron, bordered by the province of Ontario on its eastern shore and the state of Michigan on its western shore, is the second-largest of the five Great Lakes and the fifth-largest freshwater lake in the world. First Nations people, including the Hurons for whom the lake is named, have inhabited Lake Huron and its surrounding watershed for at least 2,000 to 3,000 years. The European ‘discovery’ of the lake was made by Samuel de Champlain in 1615, accompanied by Étienne Brulé and their First Nations guides.

Obverse: Susanna Blunt’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The queen faces to the left, as is the tradition. The inscription reads: ELIZABETH II, CANADA, D·G·REGINA. Susanna Blunt’s initials “SB” are located on the Queen’s right shoulder, slightly above the bust truncation.

Reverse: A meticulously-accurate topographic representation of Lake Huron and environs. The Lake is sunk into the face of the coin with descending elevations depicted in lighter shades of blue. A translucent blue enamel fills the lake area creating a flat surface. Around the rim is a compass bezel. At the bottom of the coin, oriented to the left, is the inscription: LAKE HURO; oriented to the right, is the inscription:  LAC HURON. The coin’s denomination 20 DOLLARS is located to the left of the lake. Beneath the word DOLLARS is the date: 2015.
