United Kingdom 2015 Buckingham Palace £100 Silver Coin

Description:

Buckingham Palace has become a cherished symbol for the people of the United Kingdom, both as a Royal residence and as a rallying point for the country in times of national need. Purchased by George III in 1761, Buckingham House was transformed into its present form after more than 200 years of renovation and new construction. The Palace was finally “completed” in 1914, shortly before the outbreak of World War I. Recent news reports indicate that the palace is in need of a major renovation, with the cost of the repairs expected to exceed £150 million.

This two-ounce silver coin is the second limited-edition £100 for £100 commemorative coin ever issued by the Royal Mint. The first was a £100 coin featuring ‘Big Ben’, released in December 2014. As was the case with that release, the Royal Mint’s 2015 Buckingham Palace £100 Silver Coin carries a maximum mintage of 50,000 pieces.

Obverse:

The design features the Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, also known as the Fifth Portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The inscription reads: ELIZABETH II ·D[EI] · G[RA] · REG F[ID] · D[EF] · 100 POUNDS · 2015 · ELIZABETH II.

Reverse:

Buckingham Palace is seen in the background, the Victoria Memorial in the foreground, situated to the left of the design. A crowd of people representing tourists and sightseers gather around the fountain. A cloudy sky is depicted above the palace. The designers’ initials: LCGD is located at the seven o’clock position next to the rim. This design was also used in the 2014 Portraits of Britain £5 Commemorative Coin Program.

Designer(s): Designer Jody Clark’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is the fifth and current standard for all coinage of the United Kingdom. It is gradually replacing the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait across the Commonwealth (View Designer’s Profile). Laura Clancy has designed a number of innovative pieces for the Royal Mint. Her Designer’s Profile can be read here. Glyn Davies‘ Designer’s Profile can be found here.
