Krause Publications Announces Coin of the Year Nominees

IOLA, Wis. (Nov. 7, 2011) — Krause Publications, a leading producer of coin and paper money books, magazines, events and online products, has announced the nominees for the 2012 Coin of the Year awards.

Each year, the awards honor the best in coin design and manufacturing from around the world. The awards will be presented during a ceremony taking place at the World Money Fair in Berlin, Germany during first weekend of February 2012.

A panel of judges including authors, editors, numismatists and members of the American Numismatic Association met October 7 to choose the following nominees from hundreds received from around the world.

The coins nominated for the 2012 awards were released in 2010, and represent the highest achievement in theme, design and marketing from mints and central banks from around the world. These nominees will now go on to be judged by a worldwide panel of mint and museum officials, journalists and individual experts, to decide a winner in each individual category, and in the end, the final Coin of the Year.

These nominees will now go on to be judged by a worldwide panel of mint and museum officials, journalists and individual experts, to decide a winner in each individual category, and in the end, the final Coin of the Year.

Last year’s COTY winner was a 100-rand gold coin issued by the South African Mint from the Mint’s popular Natura series, which highlights the severe threat faced by the Black Rhinoceros due to poachers who use sophisticated equipment and poaching methods. The original design featured on the coin was created by Natanya van Niekerk, who during the awards ceremony made an impassioned plea to those in attendance to not forget the animal. She recited poaching statistics and emphasized the necessity of human action to save the species from extinction.

  1. In my opinion the Best is Czech Royal wedding commemorative coin – 200 Korun commemorative silver coin to mark the 700th anniversary of John of Luxembourg’s marriage to Elizabeth of Premyslides.

Reverse design of this modern coin looks like classical medieval coin.
