Numismatic Books – Kolbe & Fanning in 2016

The New York Book Auction

Kolbe & FanningKolbe & Fanning 2016 NY Book Auction flyer started the year with our 2016 New York Book Auction on Saturday, January 9, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Conducted in conjunction with the 2016 New York International Numismatic Convention, the sale featured the celebrated RBW Library on Roman Republican coinage and other properties. The 455-lot sale brought above its total estimate and was a success on all fronts.

While detailed results have been given elsewhere, a few highlights include:

  • Bahrfeldt’s three-part revision of Babelon on Roman Republican coins (lot 29), which brought $4,250 on a $1,000 estimate;
  • the Duke of Devonshire’s exceptional copy of the 1532 Paris folio edition of Budé’s De asse et partibus eius (lot 55), which sold for $9,000; and
  • lot 428, an original manuscript record of Cogan’s 1859 Charles B. Foote sale, which sold for $11,000 (all results cited are hammer prices).

As always, we enjoyed the show, which is a truly special occasion that brings participants from around the world and showcases some of the finest coins (and books!) available.

Upcoming Sales

Kolbe & Fanning are always interested in trying to develop new ways to reach our customers. In a week or so, we will be issuing a PDF catalogue of books available at fixed prices. The attractively illustrated catalogue will be short (36 listings) but sweet, with interesting items on ancient, medieval and modern numismatics from around the world. Those on our email list will be the first to receive the catalogue, but don’t delay: most items are one of a kind.

Our next auction will be an online sale tentatively scheduled for early spring. A printed catalogue is planned for early summer. Additional short-but-sweet PDF catalogues will be issued on occasion as well.

Kolbe & Fanning have become members of the Independent Online Booksellers Association (IOBA), which approves members based on their professionalism and adherence to a code of ethics in bookselling. Our online retail stock is now offered on their website at IOBA.org and Biblio.com in addition to Abe, eBay and Amazon. You’ll still get the best price buying directly from numislit.com, but it helps to spread the word!

Anaheim in August

Kolbe & Fanning are excited to be attending the World’s Fair of Money in Anaheim, California this August 9-13. Maria and Sam will be there this year since Sam starts middle school the following week. Our booth will be full of great deals on titles from George’s office that we do NOT want to ship back to Ohio, so come with lots of empty luggage!

K&F Office Expansion

2016 began with a much-needed expansion of our offices in Ohio into the adjacent office space. When our neighbor vacated we made plans to cut a door running through to the other space; when the contractor broke through the wall, we found that fate had already placed a door there! The new space allows David and Maria to have their own offices (instead of a corner of our stockroom), a kitchenette (to keep soup off our laptops), a whole room dedicated to book photography (instead of the hot and cramped corner giving Maria back pain), and several rooms to spread out stock to examine, catalogue and ultimately offer for sale.

We will be keeping our old address for mailing and shipping purposes to keep things simple. If you’re ever in the central Ohio area, feel free to stop by and fill up a box or two!
