THE PRE ANA SHOW 2011

By Laura Sperber – Legend Numismatics

SURPRISE!

Not! It was exactly as we expected-looking like a morgue. You really can not have a show with 80 tables sold placed within a show where there are 500 tables. It is not an inviting atmosphere. Plus, Comic Con was in the Hall next door-almost 100,000 comic fans (oh the crazy outfits they wore) attended. Traffic and parking were nightmares.

ACTIVITY

Our very first sale (in the hotel) was for six figures. Our sales have not ebbed since. We have sold soup to nuts. Of course gold is red hot. All of our “old friends” have been sold already (something we’d have been happy with if only half sold by the end of ANA). Dealers who did attand the PRE show came to do serious business. We did not hear ANY reports of anyone not doing well.

We also sold a $450,000.00 copper coin, in a clean transaction with immediate payment.

Our sales have exceed our expectations-for the entire ANA Show already! That is UNBELIVEABLE!

THE HERITAGE SALE

As always, Heritage puts on one mighty auction. We knew there would be crazy “moon money” prices realized. It was really clear, the CAC coins in the sale were cleary nuclear HOT with what they realized.

The highlight of the sale was the 1855S $3 NGC PR64. We ended up an underbidder (thats not something we are too familiar with). The coin sold for $1,322,000.00 with active bidding.

Here are a few random pieces sold:

5C 1912 PCGS PR67 CAC $9,200.00

H10 1873 PCGS PR67 CAC $10,925.00

10C 1879 PCGS PR67 CAC $5,462.00

20C 1878 PCGS PR66 Cameo CAC $21,850.00

25C 1868 PCGS PR66 CAMEO CAC $14,950.00

50C 1904 PCGS PR67+ CAMEO CAC $17,250.00

$1 1881CC PCGS MS65+ DMPL CAC $4,025.00

$1 1888 PCGS PR66 Cameo CAC $19,550.00

$1 1900 O/CC PCGS MS67 CAC $37,375.00

$1 1921 Chapman PCGS PR64 Cameo CAC $57,500.00

$2.5 1925D PCGS MS66 CAC $21,850.00

$10 1863 PCGS PR65 DCameo CAC $299,000.00

$10 1913S PCGS MS64 CAC $83,375.00

$10 1915 PCGS MS64+ CAC $4,600.00

$20 1927 PCGS MS67 CAC $20,700.00

There are many more record prices we could have reported from this sale. There were two collections in particular that were NOT maxed out and were absolutely fresh to the market. Plus, they had tremendous eye appeal. Since the market had been so dry of coins for so long, the “moon money” prices realized were not really unexpected. In fact, if the coins did not sell for these levels that would have been bad.

The coin market is clearly alive and healthy! The CAC and high end markets clearly rule as well.

Of course we’ll do another report when we return from the ANA Show Sunday night (when we being to post our NEWPS). So far, the floor has lived up to its expectations for buying-a trickle. Looks like all the better coins ended up in auction-and most sold directly to collectors.
