The beloved Melbourne Cricket Ground and the iconic cricket ball have become the shining stars of a stunning curved silver collectible coin released by the Royal Australian Mint under license from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

The ICC Cricket World Cup is the ultimate in One Day International Cricket, and is therefore deserving of an impressive design with the Mint creatively utilising the outward curve to resemble a ball and the inward concave obverse depicting a representation of the slope of the famous stands of the MCG.

Royal Australian Mint CEO Mr. Ross MacDiarmid said the award-winning domed feature is reserved for themes that work well with that type of innovation.

“Cricket is not only a great part of our sporting heritage but it is also a popular theme that lends itself perfectly to utilise the innovative curved feature,” said Mr MacDiarmid.

“With only 5,000 available, we are fairly certain by the end of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 we’ll be sold out.”

With the number of cricket fans exceeding well over 5,000, a collectible 20-cent coin, with a larger limit of 50,000, has also been produced featuring the most iconic elements of the glorious game in one design, an impressive cricketer captured in motion and the hotly contested ICC Cricket World Cup trophy.

cricketcoin2John Harnden, ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Chief Executive said this collection symbolises the importance of cricket in Australian and New Zealand sporting history and a great way to remember the iconic games being held in the two countries.

“Cricket is a national pastime for many Australians and New Zealanders, playing and watching, so it is fitting that the Royal Australian Mint produces special coins to mark these significant games playing in our very own backyard,” said Mr Harnden.

These two limited collectible coins, the stunning 2015 $5 Fine Silver Proof Domed Coin and the 2015 20c Uncirculated Coin, are available now from the Mint’s online store https://eshop.ramint.gov.au/product-category.aspx?KWD=cricket and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 online store www.icccricketstore.com/memorabilia/.
