CCAC Releases 2016 Native American Dollar Candidate Designs

The Citizens Coinage Advisory Commission (CCAC) has released the following candidate design images for the 2016 Native American dollar coin. The 2016 Native American dollar reverse will recognize the heroic contributions of the Native American Code Talkers of World Wars I & II.

Native American Code Talkers from more than thirty tribes served with distinction and played an important role in concealing the nature of secret communiques between American forces.

Since 2009, the United States Mint in accordance with an Act of Congress, has released the Native American golden dollar with new reverses each year to celebrate the many contributions Native Americans have made throughout United States history.

The CCAC will forward their recommendations to the Secretary of the Treasury. In addition, the candidate designs will be reviewed by the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), the Committee on Indian Affairs of the Senate, the Congressional Native American Caucus of the House of Representatives, and the National Congress of American Indians. The Secretary of the Treasury has ultimate authority over the selection of the coin’s design.

  1. I like that both WWI and WWII are recognized on R-02 and R-09…..It’d be nice to name the different tribes, on the other side of the coin, who were the code talkers…..I know about the Chahta and Dine’. (Choctaw and Navajo) but I’m positive there were others (Cheyenne?) I can’t recall.
