From Truman to Ford: Presidential Dollar Designs Unveiled

The United States Mint has released concept artwork of the designs selected to represent Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. The first four designs (Truman through Kennedy) will be struck in 2015, the remaining two are scheduled for 2016.

Since 2007, in accordance with Public Law 109-145, also referred to as the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, the United States Mint has produced four dollar coin designs per year honoring each of the Presidents of the United States starting with George Washington. The program is scheduled to come to an end in 2016 with the release of the Ronald Reagan Presidential dollar.

After the Reagan coin is struck, several living presidents will be absent from the set as living Presidents are prohibited from appearing on United States coins. In the event that a living past or current President dies during the program, the law calls for a 2-year moratorium on the production of a coin bearing that President’s likeness.

The living former Presidents are Jimmy Carter, George H. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush.

  1. I agree with Scott’s comments above – the image of President Kennedy is to say the least – insulting to his memory. President Kennedy was a very handsome man and the half Dollar design went through several changes before it was finally approved by Mrs. Kennedy and the Kennedy family. I’m sorry to see that little thought was paid to this coin which many collectors were eagerly anticipating, some because he was the president when they were born, some because the legacy and tragic assassination of John Kennedy is still a part of the popular culture of the United States. I urge the US Mint to reconsider this design and choose a more respectful and recognisable image of the 35th President.

  2. The Kennedy rendition offered in the above article is excellent. The half dollar has already portrayed the optimism of Kennedy well and long enough.

This dollar’s display of a somber president depicts a much appreciated acknowledgement of the tragic end to the man’s life short but extraordinary life. Not all presidential dollar coinage needs to be filled with depictions of lifeless, indifferent, and altogether boring faces. This Kennedy depiction is excellent, shows artistry and is the only presidential dollar coin that shows any amount of soul.

For those responsible for selecting the design, do not listen to the above comments which represent those that favor the tired and trite depictions.
