The storied 1715 Plate Fleet was carrying an enormous amount of treasure from the New World to Spain when it got caught in a hurricane off the east coast of Florida. Eleven of the 12 ships sank on July 31, 1715. Although the vast majority of the treasure was silver, 1715 Fleet – Queens Jewels recovered several hundred gold coins from Colombia, Mexico and Peru that were subsequently submitted to NGC.

The NGC certification not only lists the attribution and grade for each coin, but also notes the shipwreck provenance and the story of each coin’s find. Brent Brisben, manager of recovery operations for 1715 Fleet – Queens Jewels, has provided commentary on each find in NGC’s image gallery.

Among the many highlights of the recovered coins are a (1694-1713) Colombia 2 Escudo graded NGC MS 64, a 1711-LM Peru 2 Escudo graded NGC MS 66 and a 1712-LM Peru 8 Escudo graded NGC MS 64.
