Stack’s The Entlich, White Oak, Gross, St. Andre, and York Collections, Baltimore, Maryland

by CoinWeek

stacks_march09_standlibBaltimore is the location for another landmark Stack’s auction, beginning on Monday, March 23, 2009 at 1:00pm. This auction sale spans an incredible nearly 4,000 lots, covering coins, medals, tokens, plates, and paper money along the way. Well over one hundred consignors participated in this heavily laden sale, and between them, their items cover all of the major numismatic categories. To begin with the headline collections, the Bob Entlich Collection features a wide-ranging group of Colonial and U.S. coins as well as a nice assortment of paper money. The White Oak Collection, a superb and high quality gathering of New York City, Borough, and Upstate obsolete notes, private and municipal scrip, and fiscal paper, provides a fascinating panorama of banking and financial history of New York City after the Revolutionary War.

The Richard Gross Collection is another major feature of this auction sale, and provides a healthy, well-rounded offering of U.S. coins, medals, Washington pieces, and so-called dollars. Other highlights include the St. Andre Collection of U.S. double eagles, a fairly comprehensive set of Liberty Head and Saint-Gaudens types. The set includes examples of the rare 1860-O, 1861-O, 1866-S No Motto, 1870-CC, and 1920-S, among other issues. The York Collection,…

Building A High Quality 19TH and 20TH Century U.S. Gold Type Set: The BVG Theory

by CoinWeek

By Doug Winter – www. raregoldcoins.com

In the last few decades, specialized (and highly specialized) collecting has become all the rage in numismatics. But back in the day, anyone who was anyone collected coins by type. I believe that the type method of collecting still applies well to United States gold; especially those coins produced from 1838 through 1933.

winter_picks_may08I wrote an article in March 2000 in which I coined the phrase “Best Value Grade.” This concept (if not this phrase…) seemed to have a big impact on the people who read it and to this day I still have people refer to it when discussing individual coins with me.

In case you’ve forgotten what Best Value Grade or BVG means (and I accept your apology if you have forgotten) I described it as follows back in March 2000: “every U.S. coin has a price point above which it no longer makes economic sense to purchase it.” Let me give you a quick example of the BVG.

Let’s say you can buy a nice MS64 1899-S double eagle for around $3,000-3,500. Seems like a pretty reasonable price for a coin that is relatively scarce in this…

Shamrock Activist Value Fund Urges Immediate Sale of Collectors Universe, Inc.

by CoinWeek

Shamrock Capital Advisors, Inc. has transmitted the following letter to Mr. A. Clinton Allen Chairman of the Board of Collectors Universe, Inc. on March 6, 2009:

shamrock_cuThe Shamrock Activist Value Fund (“SAVF”) currently owns 806,005 shares or 8.8% of Collectors Universe, Inc.’s outstanding common stock and strongly recommends that the Board of Directors immediately begin the process to sell the company.

We believe the company’s core business of providing value added authentication services is an attractive business and far more valuable than implied by its current stock price of $3.37 per share. Our analysis concludes that the intrinsic value of Collectors Universe is at least $7 per share. The Board has a fiduciary responsibility to maximize the value of the company and should attempt to realize that value through a transaction rather than attempting to provide oversight of the current flawed strategic direction of the business.

We believe the company is an attractive acquisition candidate and has a profile that would facilitate a transaction given the significant amount of cash and cash equivalents on the balance sheet as well as the company’s ability to generate positive cash flow. Further, there are significant costs the company is…

MARCH MADNESS – Legend Market Report

by CoinWeek

When we write a MARKET REPORT please note, we are discussing the current events of the coin market from our point of view ONLY. Other dealers opinions maybe be stronger or weaker depending on how they run their businesses. What we state is FACT, NOT fiction.

A CHANGE IN THE GOLD GENERIC MARKET?

clean_inventoryNow that gold has calmed down a bit and backed off of $1,000.00 we see some important changes happening our customers need to be aware of.

The big telemarketers had switched from MS64/65 Saints to MS62/63 Saints a few weeks ago because they simply could not find enough of the higher grade coins. Now, with gold down the demand is still strong for 64/65 coins, but not as strong as it was. Plus, with all the dealers in the world trying to buy these coins and having minor success, the premiums being paid for 64/65 Saints and a few other larger size gold coins are falling. Our guess is they have come down a full 10% in the past week. Few dealers we spoke to were comfortable with the idea of MS65 Saints being BID at $2,200.00-even if it was the market.

We believe if gold continues…

Goldline Becomes the Exclusive Precious Metals Company of The Fred Thompson Show

by CoinWeek

fred_thompson

Former U.S. senator and 2008 presidential candidate Fred Thompson has selected Goldline International, Inc. as his exclusive gold dealer and will be endorsing Goldline on his new radio show, The Fred Thompson Show.

“We are happy to welcome Goldline as one of our first sponsors of The Fred Thompson Show,” said Thompson. “Jeri [Thompson] and I chose Goldline as our source for gold and precious metals. Like many investors, we believe that gold is an important part of a diversified portfolio, especially in these troubled economic times. That’s why we tell our friends and listeners to call Goldline to learn more about acquiring gold.”

Fred Thompson is one of the most respected and visible figures in politics today. Thompson served eight years as a Senator from Tennessee, and in 2008 sought the Republican nomination for President of the United States. Serving as Chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, and as a member of the Finance Committee and Select Committee on Intelligence, Senator Thompson focused on lowering taxes, strengthening national security, and cutting wasteful government spending.

“Goldline is extremely honored to be selected by Senator Thompson as his choice for gold coins and other precious metals,” said Mark Albarian,…
