War of 1812 Money was offered by Geoffrey Bell Auctions – 200 Years In The Making

The war of 1812 was a defining point in Canadian history, bring Upper Canada together in unity and pride as part of the British Empire. Owning a part of this historical event is often a dream for Canadian and history buffs along with paper money collectors.

This past May 30, 2013, Geoffrey Bell Auctions  featured a pair of $10 Army Bills from the final Quebec Issue dated 1815, and the only known surviving examples from this note issue known to exist. The Army Bills were  graded and authenticated by Paper Money Guaranty, and are outstanding examples of these first seen notes. The Army Bills are estimated to be worth to be worth $20,000-$25,000 each, but did not sell.

These particular War of 1812 notes relate back to Ebenezer Roseberry, a tavern keeper who was situated along the Radnor Road, now known as Wyandot County, during the War of 1812, and it is believed he was the one who was in possession of the note shortly after their issue in 1815. The Army Bills are signed by George Walters Allsopp, a Quebec militia officer, businessman and politician, who served as the cashier in the Army Bill Office in Quebec City.

These rare Quebec Army Bills were available for viewing at the Toronto Coin Expo prior to the Geoffrey Bell Auction on May 30 at the Toronto Reference Library, located at 789 Yonge Street.
