PCGS Exhibits Superb Large Cents At FUN

More than 130 superb-quality U.S. large cents from the High Desert Collection will be publicly exhibited for the first time anywhere by Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com) during the 58th Annual FUN convention, January 10 – 13, 2013.  Visitors to the PCGS booth (booth #100) also can test their skills for a chance to win a free rare coin prize in the PCGS Photograde™ Online Grading Contest.

“The High Desert Collection display includes three dozen large cents that are the finest-known or tied for finest-known in the PCGS Population Report.  The 1793 Liberty Cap variety graded PCGS Secure Plus MS64+ BN is valued at nearly $1.5 million,” said Don Wills, President of PCGS.

The owner of the collection has been building it for years with the assistance of New York dealer and award-winning numismatic author Scott A. Travers.  Although all of the outstanding coins in the FUN display were only recently added to the PCGS Set Registry™, their overall quality immediately ranked them as the second finest current collection in the category, Large Cents Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1793-1857).

“The set  is 100 percent complete and has a weighted grade point average of 61.645,” said BJ Searls, PCGS Set Registry Program Manager.  “In addition to the basic set of circulation strike large cents, the display at FUN will also include high-quality examples of some major varieties.”

The owner ranks his top ten favorite large cents in his collection as:

1793 Chain AMERICA, PCGS Secure Plus MS63 BN

1793 Liberty Cap, PCGS Secure Plus MS64+ BN

1794 Starred Reverse, PCGS Secure Plus XF45 BN

1795 Lettered Edge, PCGS Secure Plus MS65 BN

1797 Reverse of 1797 With Stems, PCGS Secure Plus MS66 RB

1798 Second Hair Style, PCGS Secure Plus MS63 BN

1808 PCGS Secure Plus MS64 RB

1827 PCGS Secure Plus MS65 BN

1839 Silly Head, PCGS Secure Plus MS66+ RD

1855 Knob On Ear, PCGS Secure Plus MS64 RD

The PCGS Photograde™ Online Grading Contest will be open to children in high school and pre-high school categories as well as adults.  Adult contestants will have 20 minutes to examine and grade 20 U.S. coins; young numismatists will need to grade 10 U.S. coins.  The winning adult with the most correct answers that match the coins’ actual PCGS grades will receive a free Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle gold coin, and the top youth contestants will each win an MS65 Morgan silver dollar.

For additional information, call PCGS Customer Service at (800) 447-8848, or at the FUN convention ask any PCGS representative about the contest and to obtain a free entry form.
