CoinWeek Coin Designer’s Profile: Frank Gasparro

Frank Gasparro (August 26, 1909 – September 29, 2001) was an American medalist and coin designer.

From 1965 to 1981, Gasparro served as the 10th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, replacing Gilroy Roberts, who left in 1965 to head the Franklin Mint. He studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and was hired by the United States Mint in 1942. While his artistic style can best be described as competent, Gasparro’s professionalism and work ethic earned him the respect of his peers inside and outside of the U.S. Mint.

His most notable designs appeared on United States coins. He is the designer of the Lincoln Memorial cent reverse (1959-2008), the Kennedy half dollar reverse (1964-Present), the Eisenhower dollar (1971-1978), and the Susan B. Anthony dollar (1979-1981, 1999).

Gasparro was also commissioned to create a number of official U.S. and private medals, including medals for the ANA, the ANS, and the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
