France 2015 The Seine Banks: Invalides – Grand Palais 5 Euro Gold Coin

Description:

The L’Hôtel national des Invalides was built under order of King Louis XIV as a place to house disabled French war veterans. Libéral Bruant (1635-1697) was commissioned to design the structure and construction began in 1671 and lasted eight years. For more than 200 years, the Hotel served its intended purpose. Today, the site is an important destination for tourists and military enthusiasts. It houses a significant collection of Army artifacts and exhibits, and is the internment site for Napoleon I (1769-1821), members of his family, and nearly 100 notable French military figures. The site was designated a national historical monument in 2000.

The Grand Palais des Champs-Élysées was constructed as the host site of the 1900 Exposition Universelle. Construction on the great exhibition hall began in 1897. Architect Charles Girault oversaw construction. Architects Louis-Albert LouvetAlbert-Félix-Théophile Thomas, and Henri Deglane worked with Girault on the design. Today, the Palais is a popular tourist attraction, drawing more than 1.5 million visitors a year. It houses museums, hosts exhibitions, and fashion shows. The sites along with other historic structures on the bank of the Seine were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
