Over the weekend, the United States Mint updated their product schedule to announce that the 2016 Ronald W. Reagan Coin & Chronicles Set will be available for order at noon Eastern Time on October 11.

The Reagan Presidential dollar is the 39th and final issue in the Presidential $1 Coin series. Add to that the late former president’s popularity, and demand for the upcoming Coin & Chronicles set–the last of the series and the only set from 2016–should be fairly high. What makes its release especially newsworthy is the Mint’s recent track record for sales of this particular product line.

All of the 2015 Presidential $1 Coin & Chronicles Sets–featuring Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson–sold out exceedingly quickly after initial release:

–On June 30, 2015, the Truman Coin & Chronicles Set sold out within 15 minutes;

–On August 11, 2015, the Eisenhower Coin & Chronicles Set sold out within approximately 12 minutes;

–After going on and off the “Currently Unavailable” status on the Mint’s online catalog more than once, the JFK Coin & Chronicles Set became Unavailable one last time on November 2, 2015. It was released on September 16. It should be noted, however, that the Kennedy set had a maximum product limit of 50,000 – almost three times that of the 17,000 maximum for Truman and Ike, and twice that of the Johnson set’s 25,000 limit;

–And finally, on October 27, 2015, the LBJ Coin & Chronicles Set sold out by 4:00 pm, less than four hours after it went on sale.

Prices for all of the 2015 Coin & Chronicles Sets have tended to be high in the secondary market immediately following their release.

So with a collector base fully aware of the need to be “first in line” – and not a little irritated at the way the U.S. Mint has handled or not handled complaints from disappointed would-be customers over the last few years – there is every reason to suspect that the Ronald Reagan Coin & Chronicles Set will go off sale at least as rapidly as the sets that came before it.

The contents of the set will likewise be similar.

Along with a 2016 Reverse Proof Reagan Presidential $1 coin–the only Reverse Proof Presidential coin of 2016, since no Reverse Proof Nixon or Ford Presidential Dollar Coins were issued–the set will come with a silver replica of Reagan’s inaugural medal and a stamp commemorating the late president. A booklet conveying the story of Reagan’s life and time in office will also be included.

The online catalog entry for the Reagan Coin & Chronicles Set can be found here. No maximum product limit has been set to date, nor has the Mint established a household order limit. CoinWeek will keep you updated when information becomes available.
