Austrian Mint Issues First Guardian Angel, Latest “Colorful Creatures” Glow-in-the-Dark Coins

Someone to Watch Over You

On Wednesday, February 22, the Austrian Mint issued the first coin in its new series, “Guardian Angels”, and the second coin in the successful three-euro glow-in-the-dark coin series “Colorful Creatures”.

Guardian Angels is the Austrian Mint’s talismanic four-coin interfaith series of 10 euro coins in silver and copper featuring historical representations of angels. The silver Proof quality version of these superbly crafted little pieces of art history uses our state-of-the-art color application technique to make these pocket-sized lucky tokens even more special. From Judaism to Zoroastrianism and from Christianity to Islam, through the ages people of many faiths have looked to angels for protection.

Michael – The Protecting Angel is the first coin in the series, the leader of the angels being followed later in 2017 by Gabriel, and by Raphael and Uriel in 2018. The talismanic qualities of Michael are said to include protection from self-doubt, stimulation of both self-knowledge and self-respect, encouragement of hard work and diligence, and protection from nightmares. The reverse of the coin shows a detail adapted from the famous depiction of Saint Michael fighting the dragon, painted on the altar of the church of Saint Miquel de Soriguerola in Catalonia, Spain. Not only historical masterpieces, Guardian Angels are pocket-sized lucky tokens that will make you feel someone is watching over you.

The silver coin Michael is legal tender and will be available in two finishes, Proof and Special Uncirculated, with a maximum mintage of 30,000 and 40,000 respectively. The Proof coins come encapsulated in a presentation case with a numbered certificate of authenticity. The certificate includes all the technical details as well as background information about the series. The special uncirculated coins are available in a blister pack with a Michael design on the sleeve.

The coin will also be available in Austria only in the regular circulation finish and struck in copper. The copper coins have a rilled edge whereas the silver coins have a smooth edge.

Also available for the series are collection cases for each respective coin type, SU or proof. For the SU series there is a frosted synthetic box bearing the series logo. The proof case is made from a heavy card stock and includes a small booklet detailing the whole series.
