Bulgaria to Issue New 2 Lev Denomination of Coin

The Bulgarian National Bank will put a new 2-lev coin into circulation starting December 7, 2015

On October 22, 2015, the Governing Council of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) made a decision to release into circulation as legal tender a new circulation coin with a face value of 2 levs (BGN 2).

The obverse of the coin features, in the centre of the inner circle, the nominal value indicated by the figure ‘2’ furrowed by lines. On the periphery is a graphical pattern of crossing lines, both on the inner circle and the outer ring. The lower side of the coin features the inscription ‘ЛЕВA’ (levs) with the letters starting from the outer ring and crossing into the inner circle. The year of issue ‘2015’ is on the outer ring to the right of the word ‘ЛЕВA’.

The reverse of the coin features the stylized image of national hero St. Paisius of Hilendar on the inner circle and the years ‘1722 – 1773’, and on the outer ring the inscriptions ‘ПАИСИЙ ХИЛЕНДАРСКИ’ (Paisius of Hilendar) and ‘БЪЛГАРИЯ’ (Bulgaria).

  • Metal – A bi-component coin: inner circle of yellowish CuNiZn (“Nickel Silver”) alloy; outer ring of white CuNi (cupronickel) alloy

  • Diameter – 26.5 mm
  • Edge – alternating serrated and smooth sectors

BNB underlines that the banknotes of BGN 2 denomination issues 1999 and 2005 will remain legal tender circulating in parallel with the new 2-lev (BGN 2) circulation coin.

The coin will be officially presented on 26 November 2015, and the presentation will mark the start of a public awareness campaign.
