Royal Canadian Mint 3rd Numismatic Catalogue of 2017 Shines Spotlight on Canada 150

In keeping with its tradition of telling Canada's story through coins, the Royal Canadian Mint is sharpening its focus on Canada's 150th birthday with many new coins and sets, while issuing other innovative products and finely crafted icons of Canadiana. All of these coins are now available to the public.

The long-awaited circulation coins commemorating Canada's 150th anniversary are now available in three new uncirculated sets with a price range of $19.95 to $34.95 CAD. The first of these products is the 2017 My Canada, My Inspiration Collector Card, an easy way to instantly collect all five winning 2017 commemorative circulation coin designs. This five-coin set also features a colored 25-cent coin as well the colored version of the two-dollar design, which is also the world's first glow-in-the-dark circulation coin.

These same coins, as well as uncolored versions of 25-cent and two-dollar designs and a 50-cent coin, whose reverse features the official Canada 150 logo, are offered in the eight-piece 2017 Uncirculated Set.

Finally, the circulating My Canada, My Inspiration designs and 2017-dated classic designs of Canada's circulating denominations are brought together in the special 12-piece 2017 Canada 150 Circulation Collection.

In tribute to 150 years of Canadian history, the Mint has issued the 150th Anniversary of Confederation 2017 Proof Silver Dollar and Fine Silver Proof Set featuring a classic female allegory of Canada designed by Canadian artist Rebecca Yanovskaya. The reverse design of the Proof Silver Dollar is rich in symbols such as the single feather clasped by the youthful figure of Canada: a tribute to the First Nations People and Fathers of Confederation who forged out nation's path, and the scroll held up in her opposite hand, representing Canada's founding constitution: The British North America Act of 1867.

Closing out this month's offering of Canada 150-themed coins is the newest release from the 2017 $10 Fine Silver Coin Series – Celebrating Canada's 150th, featuring Peter Mather's haunting photo of the Aurora Borealis at McIntyre Creek in the Yukon Territory.

The Mint is again taking innovative steps to cast a new light on Canada's natural heritage with its very first coin to feature black rhodium plating on the 2017 $20 Fine Silver Coin – Nocturnal by Nature: The Barn Owl. Designed by Jamie Desrochers, the dramatic sight of this night-time predator framed by the image of a full moon virtually leaps out from the darkness of the rhodium plating which fills the remainder of the coin.

The ancient coin-making technique of "splash striking" a coin without a uniform rim makes its Mint debut on the 2017 $20 Fine Silver Coin – Ancient Canada: Ornithomimus. Its design is derived from a fossil image curated by Alberta's famous Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology and the combination of its antiqued stone-like finish and irregular edges evokes the appearance of a genuine fossil.

New coins offered in the March 2017 catalogue also include:

  • The 2017 $100 Fine Silver Coin – Vimy Ridge, featuring a partial reproduction of The Taking of Vimy Ridge, Easter Monday, 1917 by painter Richard Jack, Canada's first official war artist;
  • The 2017 $20 Fine Silver Coin – Second World War Battlefront Series: The Battle of Dieppe, featuring the artwork of Alan Daniel;
  • The 2017 $20 Fine Silver Coin – Aircraft of the Second World War Series: Consolidated Canso, designed by David A. Oram;
  • Two new maple leaf-inspired creations with the 2017 50-Cent Pure Gold Coin – The Silver Maple Leaf by artist Margaret Best and the 2017 $20 Fine Silver Coin – Canadiana Kaleidoscope: The Maple Leaf by Calder Moore;
  • The 2017 $10 Fine Silver Coin – The Sugar Shack, illustrated in brilliant color by Tony Bianco;
  • The 2017 $10 Fine Silver Coin – Birds Among Nature's Colors: Chickadee, designed by Jean-Charles Daumas and the first in a series featuring traditional engraving of well-known Canadian birds contrasted by a color illustration of their natural habitat;
  • The 2017 $20 Fine Silver Coin – Little Creatures: Dogbane Beetle, designed by Maurice Gervais and enhanced with a Venetian glass insect sculpture;
  • The 2017 $8 Fine Silver Coin – Lion Dance, featuring the artwork of Simon Ng; and
  • The double crystal-enhanced 2017 $3 Fine Silver Coin Zodiac Series – Aries (April), designed by Pandora Young.
