Western Australia Governor Welcomes Perth Mint Royal Tribute Coins

As a former branch of the UK Royal Mint, The Perth Mint commemorates the remarkable life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with the release of three gold and silver birthday tributes.

Having celebrated her 90th birthday on Thursday 21 April 2016, Her Majesty became the first British monarch in history to mark such a milestone.

Struck by The Perth Mint from 2oz and 1/4oz of 99.99% pure gold, and 1oz of 99.99% pure silver, each precious keepsake is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.

The artistry on each coin depicts St. Edward’s Crown surrounded by wattle branches. The inscriptions H.M. QUEEN ELIZABETH II and 90TH BIRTHDAY, the date ‘21-4-2016’, and The Perth Mint’s historic ‘P’ mintmark, also feature in the design.

Her Excellency the Honourable Kerry Sanderson AO, Governor of Western Australia, who represents the Sovereign as Head of State, commented on the coin releases at a recent photo engagement at Government House.

Queen Elizabeth II 90th Birthday 2oz Gold Proof High Relief Coin, in front of a portrait of Her Majesty. “The celebration of Her Majesty’s 90th birthday is a remarkable moment in history and The Perth Mint has created exceptional coin tributes for the occasion.

“I am particularly delighted to see the craftsmanship showcasing branches of the golden wattle, our national flower which was depicted in the brooch presented to the Queen during her coronation tour of Australia in 1954, and the St. Edward’s Crown symbolising our historical links with British constitutional and parliamentary heritage,” said Her Excellency.

Perth Mint Chief Executive Officer Richard Hayes said that The Perth Mint is proud to honour its British lineage by issuing Buckingham Palace-approved coins to observe the personal milestones of the Royal Family.

“It is a privilege to release these birthday commemoratives as they symbolise Australia’s deepest congratulations to Her Majesty The Queen as she celebrates her outstanding 90-year journey,” he concluded.

Capturing the essence of this precious moment, The Perth Mint will release no more than 300 of the H.M. Queen Elizabeth II 90th Birthday 2oz Gold Proof High Relief Coin, 5,000 of the H.M. Queen Elizabeth II 90th Birthday 1oz Silver Proof High Relief Coin and 1,000 of the H.M. Queen Elizabeth II 90th Birthday 1/4oz Gold Proof Coin.
