You’ll need to race against time if you want get your hands on the latest Doctor Who coin – there are only 250 in the known universe.
Following on from its silver predecessor, a gold one-ounce coin has been struck by New Zealand Mint to continue the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the longest-running sci-fi television series Doctor Who.
Produced in collaboration with BBC Worldwide Australia & New Zealand Mint, the 9999 gold coin – like its silver counterpart – features an engraved picture of the iconic TARDIS as well as a unique 50th Anniversary logo.
The coin has a nominal value of $200 and comes packaged in a classic wooden box. Only 250 have been minted and each one is expected to retail for US$2,500.
New Zealand Mint chief executive Simon Harding says the gold coin has been produced following the “significant” international response to the silver coin from Doctor Who fans around the world.
We auctioned off eight silver limited edition Doctor Who 50th anniversary commemorative coins on ebay, with all profits from the auctions going to our annual initiative of sending two students from the island of Niue to Outward Bound and in doing so created an international bidding frenzy with one coin selling to a Canadian bidder for more than 15 times its $155 face value.
We think this limited edition Doctor Who one ounce gold coin will be snapped up in record time – it’s a very exclusive mintage with only 250 coins produced, Mr Harding says.
’After the success of the silver Doctor Who 50th anniversary commemorative coin, we are delighted to be partnering again with NZ Mint on the limited edition gold coin, which looks certain to be a highly coveted item amongst Doctor Who fans,’ said Rachael Hammond, Senior Licensing Executive, BBC Worldwide Australia & New Zealand
The coin is issued as legal tender under the authority of Niue Island. The reverse depicts an engraved relief of the iconic TARDIS used by the Doctor to travel through space and time. The border of the coin features the finely engraved words DOCTOR WHO 50th ANNIVERSARY 1963 – 2013.
Doctor Who first aired on the BBC in 1963 and has captivated a broad audience, from young children and families to nostalgic viewers and sci-fi fanatics.
Each of the 11 actors playing the Doctor has put a unique stamp on the role, with Peter Capaldi recently announced as the Twelfth Doctor. The many and varied companions, monsters and adversaries have all added to the show’s enduring appeal. Doctor Who celebrates its 50th anniversary on 23 November this year.
