1895-O Morgan $1 MS65+, Unseen Since Issue, Tops Heritage Long Beach Auction

Thursday, June 9, 2016 at the Long Beach Collectibles Expo; featuring an 1895-O Silver Dollar MS65+ from the Rev. Dr. James G. K. McClure Collection, tied for Finest at CAC, struck at the fabled New Orleans Mint

An 1895-O Silver Dollar MS65+ NGC CAC from the Rev. Dr. James G. K. McClure Collection, tied for the Finest known at CAC, is among the prestigious offerings in Heritage’s June 8-12, 2016 Long Beach Expo US Coins Signature® Auction, the official auction of the Long Beach Coin and Collectibles Expo. It will be offered, along with the finest coins in the event in a Premier Session on Thursday, June 9, 2016.

1895-O Morgan silver dollar, MS65+“As a victim of excessive melting and long circulation times,” said Greg Rohan, President of Heritage Auctions. “the 1895-O is the third-rarest Morgan dollar in Mint State grades. This 1895-O $1 was acquired by McClure (1848-1932) at the bank at the time of issue and has not seen the light of day since, making this an extraordinary opportunity for the right collector.”

Also offered is the key date 1856-O double eagle, considered the rarest coin struck in the 70-year history of the New Orleans Mint. The coin is graded AU55 by PCGS and is, to Heritage’s knowledge, the third-highest graded example in existence.

“Just 2,250 pieces were issued and virtually the entire mintage was released for immediate circulation,” said Rohan. “One sole specimen strike is known in mint state, so collectors looking for the finest examples of this coveted issue will find this coin quite compelling as it’s as high an AU coin of this issue as they are likely to come across.”

The Rev. Dr. James G. K. McClure Collection provides a number of exceptional rarities in the auction: a 1921-S half dollar graded MS66 by NGC is unsurpassed in quality at either major grading service and the first example to be auctioned in a grade this high in more than a decade. As a well-circulated issue, only approximately 200 1921-S halves exist in Mint State, with a majority of those MS64 and lower. This outstanding example of this scare issue is expected to command spirited bidding.
