Australia 2015 Remembrance Day $2 Coin

According to statistics kept by the Australian War Memorial, 61,254 Australians service members lost their lives serving in World War I. That service and sacrifice is forever remembered each year on November 11, Remembrance Day. To honor the occasion, the Royal Australian Mint has issued a multi-color circulating 2-dollar coin. On the obverse is the Ian Rank-Broadley likeness of Queen Elizabeth II. On the reverse, eight larks take flight around the orange glow of sunset. An image that recalls the poem “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae.

The coins began to enter circulation through Australia’s banking system on October 22, 2015. The Royal Australian Mint will strike an indeterminate number of Australia 2015 Remembrance Day $2 Coins for circulation, but will also issue up to 50,000 pieces bearing the special Canberra “C” Mintmark.

For a limited time only, the public will be able to buy a pack of five circulating coins at face value ($10) plus postage and handling by heading online to eshop.ramint.gov.au A collectible version in special themed packaging is also available for $12.50.


Obverse:

Ian Rank-Broadley’s classic effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Rank-Broadley’s initials IRB are located just beneath the bust truncation. Wrapping around the coin, just inside of the rim, are the inscriptions ELIZABETH II and AUSTRALIA 2015.

Reverse:

In center, the sun, rays of light extruding. Rings of orange and red color surround it.  Eight larks in flight encircle the sun. In the background, the poem “In Flanders Fields”. TWO DOLLARS in bold font wraps around the bottom of the coin.

Designer(s): Since 1998, Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth has served with distinction as the obverse for coins of the UK and the Commonwealth (View Designer’s Profile). Awarding-winning artist Aleksandra Stokic has been an innovative presence in Australian coins since 2011 (View Designer’s Profile).
