Description:
For lovers of astronomy, the heavens are a tantalizing window on other, more distant worlds. For the better part of the past 70 years, we were met with amazing discoveries, spectacular celestial vistas, and a call that beckons us to continue a journey that began thousands of years ago when our ancestors looked to the stars and saw the shapes of animals and gods. The Royal Canadian Mint celebrates the night’s sky with a .9999 fine silver $20 coin that boasts spectacular color, glow-in-the-dark features, and a one-of-a-kind borosilicate glass insert. Limited to 8,500 pieces, the Canada 2016 The Universe: Glow-in-the-Dark $20 Proof Silver Coin is struck as a proof and was issued in November 2015 by the Royal Canadian Mint at an issue price of $149.95 CAD.
Obverse:
Susanna Blunt’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The queen faces to the left, as is tradition. The designer’s initials “SB” appear on the queen’s right shoulder. The inscription reads ELIZABETH II D ∙ G ∙ REGINA. A beaded ring wraps around the inside of the rim.
Reverse:
A student astronomer peers through a telescope at the Burke-Gaffney Observatory at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Through the open observatory roof, the night’s sky is depicted in softly deepening shades of blue and purple. Capping off the design is a one-of-kind borosilicate glass insert designed by artist Loïc Beaumont-Tremblay that mimics the appearance of a supernova. CANADA 2016 appear at the 3 o’clock position.
