Stack’s Bowers Galleries to Present Blue Moon Collection

In the Stack’s Bowers Galleries tradition of presenting old-time cabinets at auction, The Blue Moon Collection will delight bidders in the firm’s upcoming sale to be held March 29-31, 2017, in Baltimore, Maryland. The collection was started over 50 years ago and comprises chiefly private acquisitions from Stack’s along with astute auction purchases from many of their most famous sales of the 1970s and ’80s, including the Garrett Collection (1976), the 1976 ANA auction, and Auction ’81.

Highlighting this assemblage is the stunning 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar that once was in the cabinet of R.L. Miles, Jr. – Stack’s Bowers is delighted to once again offer this incredible specimen, now certified AU-58+ by PCGS, having first presented it in the sale of the R.L. Miles, Jr. Collection in April 1969. Its appearance this March in the Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo in Baltimore represents its first public offering in nearly four decades. Connoisseurs of early American coinage will certainly embrace this exciting opportunity!

Accompanying this stunning rarity will be a showcase of original Proof sets from 1865 to the 1950s, including a complete 1907 set from the cent through Liberty Head gold and a 1908 gold Matte Proof set.

Also offered will be a lovely collection of half eagles with over 200 examples in collector grades from Extremely Fine to Choice Uncirculated, commencing with a 1795 Small Eagle and culminating in the rare 1929. Standouts include a lovely 1796/5, a rare 1821, and an 1887 Proof.

In addition to the first year of issue, silver dollars include a superb selection of Draped Bust, Gobrecht, Liberty Seated, Trade, Morgan and Peace dollars featuring numerous rare issues. Of note among them are 1851, 1852, 1873-CC and a superb Gem Cameo Proof 1895. No fewer than nine different varieties of silver Gobrecht dollars include the rarest of the rare–items like the 1836 Judd-65, the 1838 Judd-88, and the 1839 Judd-108. The collection is in the process of being certified and more information will be available shortly at stacksbowers.com.
