In this CoinWeek video, we sit with Anna Fabiankowitsch, Numismatic Curator at Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum, to discuss the coins, banknotes, and medals of Maria Theresa’s reign and their importance beyond Austria’s borders.
This video was made possible with the generous support and assistance of the Austrian Mint, which continues the proud tradition of striking authentic Maria Theresa thalers. The Austrian Mint is also celebrating the 300th anniversary of her birth this year with a four-coin series entitled Empress Maria Theresa – Treasures of History. Each issue will focus on one of four virtues attributed to Maria Theresa: Courage, Justice, Clemency and Prudence. A different portrait will be featured on each coin, with Maria Theresa depicted as a young woman, a wife, a mother and a widow, respectively.
The first sterling silver coin in the new series, “Courage“, came out April 19.
