Bank of Indonesia to Issue Banknotes, Coins Commemorating National Heroes

After the issuance of Presidential Decree Number 31 of 2016 on the Use of Images of National Heroes as the Main Picture on the Front Part of the New Print Banknotes and Coins of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, the Bank of Indonesia will issue Rupiah NKRI in seven denominations of print bank notes and four denominations of coins with images of national heroes.

Director of Communication Department of Bank Indonesia Arbonas Hutabarat in his press release on Thursday, September 14, said that referring to the Decree, which was signed by President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo on 5 September 5, those seven denominations of Rupiah banknotes and four denominations of Rupiah mint coins to be issued are:

  • Image of national hero Dr. (H.C.) Ir. Soekarno and Dr. (H.C.) Drs. Mohammad Hatta as the main picture in the front part of Rp.100,000 (one hundred thousand) banknote;
  • Image of national hero Ir. H. Djuanda Kartawidjaja as the image on the front part of Rp.50.000,00 (five thousand rupiah) banknote;
  • Image of national hero Dr. G.S.S.J. Ratulangi as the image on the front part of Rp.20.000,00 (twenty thousand rupiah) banknote;
  • Image of national hero Frans Kaisiepo as the image on the front part of Rp.10.000,00 (ten thousand rupiah) banknote;
  • Image of national hero Dr. K.H. Idham Chalid as the image on the front part of Rp.5.000,00 (five thousand rupiah) banknote;

  • Image of national hero Tjut Meutia as the image on the front part of Rp.1.000,00 (one thousand rupiah) banknote;
  • Image of national hero Mr. I Gusti Ketut Pudja as the image on the front part of Rp.1.000,00 (one thousand rupiah) coin;
  • Image of national hero Lieutenant General TNI (ret) Tahi Bonar Simatupang as the image on the front part of Rp.500,00 (five hundred rupiah) coin;
  • Image of national hero Dr. Tjiptomangunkusumo as the image on the front part of Rp.200,00 (two hundred rupiah) coin; and
  • Image of national hero Prof. Dr. Ir. Herman Johanes as the image on the front part of Rp.100,00 (one hundred rupiah) coin.

“The use of images of national heroes is done following the coordination between Bank Indonesia with the Government, including Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Social Affairs, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Law and Human Rights, including in the process to get approval of the use of images of national heroes by their heirs,” Arbonas said.

Following the issuance of the Decree, Arbonas added that the central bank will immediately prepare formulation of the design and the issuance is expected to be done and to be announced in 2016.

He further said that in order to ease the identification of the authenticity of the new banknotes and coins by the public as well as to make it difficult to counterfeit the bank notes and the coins, Bank Indonesia will strengthen the security components on the banknotes an coins that are to be issued.

“After the new banknotes and coins are issued and circulated according to the schedule, the old banknotes and coins that are still circulated at the moment can still be used as the legal payment instrument (legal tender) within the territory of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) provided that those banknotes and coins have not been withdrawn from the circulation,” Arbonas concluded.
