Description:
Founded in 1845 by a group of Russian scientists, navigators, and aristocrats, the Russian Geographical Society has contributed greatly to the pursuit of scientific discovery in both Russia and abroad. In this 50-ruble gold coin issued by the Bank of Russia, founding member Fyodor Litke (1797-1882) is honored. Litke’s cartographic work on the Bering Sea region and Alaska was critical to Russia’s navigation of the region during the period when they controlled the territory.
This gold 50-ruble coin is struck as a proof and has a limited mintage of 7,000 pieces. Issue date: September 28, 2015.
Obverse:
In the center is a two-headed eagle – the emblem of the Bank of Russia. Underneath the eagle is the inscription “Банк России” (Bank of Russia). The eagle is surrounded by a beaded circle. Between the beaded circle and the rim is the following text: ПЯТЬДЕСЯТ РУБЛЕЙ (fifty rubles), and 2015 Г[од]. Along the rim of the coin are the inscriptions “AU 999”, “7,78” (representing the coin’s weight in grams), and the mark of the Saint Petersburg Mint.
Reverse:
The bust of Fyodor Petrovich Litke, facing right. Encircling the design is the inscription РУССКОЕ ГЕОГРАФИЧЕСКОЕ ОБЩЕСТВО ОСН. в 1845 г. (Russian Geographical Society, Established in 1845). Litke’s name is inscribed: Ф.П. ЛИТКЕ below his chin.
